Lot Essay

The composition of the present work is very close to the background seen in Sickert's portrait of Israel Zangwill (Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh), the Zionist Jewish leader and novelist, who was a friend of Sickert's first wife (see W. Baron, Sickert, London, 1973, p. 315).
