Lot Essay

Wilfred first travelled to St Tropez in 1923 with his wife, Jane. The present painting depicts the unloading of wine, one of the main commodities of this fishing village. Both artists painted there and returned for further visits during this the 1920s. They encouraged Donald MacLaughlan, the etcher, and Jane's cousin, Bill James, to join them and together they formed an unofficial 'St Tropez Club'.
