In 1887 Brangwyn was commissioned by Frederick Mills, a manufacturer of artists' materials, to visit Cornwall to paint. Mills paid him a fortnightly allowance for a period of around a year, and Brangwyn was free to travel back and forth to London to show Mills his paintings, and to sell canvases to other patrons. The paintings that the artist produced in Cornwall during this period are considered to be his best work.
