Lot Essay

It was the muscle-testing movements of the dancer's body which intrigued Plazzotta, encouraging him to make several studies of Nureyev, Dowell and Sibley. The dancers are modelled at full stretch or in rehearsal, the artist exploring the dynamics of ballet rather than traditional, gracefully constructed poses. Plazzotta first modelled Nureyev in 1968, the present work being cast in 1974.
