Lot Essay

Between 1950 and 1954 Piper completed an extensive series of images of Portland and the Isle of Wight. A similar work House at Niton, Isle of Wight, (Grey College, University of Durham, John Piper A Retrospective, April-May 1999, no. 19) painted circa 1954, also shows the artist exploring the contrasts between areas of sharp light and areas of deep gloom.
