Circa 1850, perhaps Meissen
Painted with 'The Judgement of Paris' after Adriaen van der Werff, Venus holding the Golden Apple, with Cupid in attendance, being garlanded by two winged putti, before the seated Paris, a hound recumbent and two doves at his feet, behind her the retreating figures of Juno and Minerva with Mercury in attendance, in a wooded landscape with mountains in the distance, framed

Lot Essay

The original painting by Adriaen van der Werff was formerly in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden. During the Second World War the painting was moved to the Ministry for War in Berlin where it was destroyed.

Painted in 1712 the work had been in Dresden since before 1753 and prior to that had been purchased directly from the artist by Count Czernin for his collection in Prague.
