Lot Essay

The present picture is a reduced version of the original which showed Sarah Buxton with a greyhound before her. The picture was damaged in a fire in the 19th Century and the greyhound was cut away from the portrait. The two seperate pictures passed by inheritance through the family until 1917 when the portrait of Sarah Buxton was sold and the present copy was made.
