As an inscription on the frame states, the present picture depicts 'A View of Baron Hill from the edge of Lavan Sand as it anciently appeared before the new buildings and alteration in the ground was made by Thos. James, Viscount Bulkeley begun in 1775.'

Lavan Sands lies at the eastern end of the Menai Straits that separates Anglesey from the Welsh mainland.
