Cox joined the Old Water-Colour Society as an associate member in 1812, and belonged to that generation of artists which included de Wint and Copley-Fielding, whose exploration of watercolour's capabilities facilitated its rise as a national medium to rival that of oil. Cox graduated from a formally picturesque style to a more naturalistic approach, depicting the sea coast of England, Wales, and France. Figures and objects are often diminished, but wide planes of sky, sea and land register in every part the effect of the elements. Inspired by Constable, and like the Barbizon school, Cox saw the sketch's potential to be hung as an exhibited picture.
