We are grateful to Rebecca John for her assistance in preparing the catalogue entries for lots 116-122.

Edie McNeill, Dorelia's sister, came to help with the boys after Ida died in 1907 and later took charge of the kitchen at Alderney Manor while Dorelia went to have two daughters. She is described by Michael Holroyd (Augustus John, London, 1996, pp. 366-7) as, 'Small with black-brown hair and large brooding eyes, their upper lids curiously straight giving them a strange rectangular shape. Her mouth was rather prominent, curving downwards, and her expression sardonic yet vulnerable - an index of her life to come'.

A red and black chalk drawing, Head of a girl (Edie McNeill) from 1906 was sold at Christie's, London, on 27 March 1997, lot 112, for £102,700, the world record at auction for the artist's work.
