Gwen John executed a series of drawings of the same model in which she is identically attired and coiffed; all done at around the same time. The model is referred to as 'a lady', and although her identity has never been established it is possible that she is Maude Boughton-Leigh. Maude Boughton-Leigh, known as Grilda, was a fellow artist and friend of Gwen in Paris. Her sister Chloë was also the subject of several paintings and drawings by the artist.
