Michael Howard (Lowry A Visionary Artist, Salford, 2000, p. 113) comments on Lowry's technique, 'The physical processes of painting and drawing were of absolute significance to Lowry'. Whilst his output of both drawings and oils was tremendous, watercolour was a medium which the artist used only occasionally. In the late 1950s he made use of a box of watercolours that came into his possession, and the use of this medium, combined with pencil and crayon as in the present work provides a particularly fluent, colourful and spontaneous image.

Leo Solomon was principle of the Rochdale School of Art.
