Lot Essay

A chance visit to Sunderland in 1960 led to an association with the North-East coast which was to last until the artist's death. He spent weeks at a time living at the Seaburn Hotel in Sunderland making trips to the docks and bustling port on the mouth of the Tyne. The heavy ships that populate the paintings and drawings of this period move through the water with no apparent sign of human involvement, the dense black silhouettes are powerful images; more than mere carriers of cargo, they are loaded with a host of associations and metaphors (see M. Howard, Lowry A Visionary Artist, Salford, 2000, p. 235).
