The arms are those of Edgar quartering Sparrow. Devereux Edgar, 3rd son of Thomas Edgar, a Recorder of Ipswich, married Temperance, daughter of Robert Sparrow of Wickhambrook, in September 1681. He was a commissioner for the Justice of the Peace in 1700, but lost his post following a row with the local baliff whom he called 'a lyer, blockhead and a jackanape'. Friends petitioned the Queen on his behalf using as his defence the fact that the baliff had been granting 'Freeman' for 6 a time to allow people to avoid being drafted. He was restored as Commissioner in 1710.
