Lot Essay

This work will be included in the forthcoming Hans Hofmann catalogue raisonné being supported by the Renate, Hans and Maria Hofmann Trust.

Tina Dickey, the author of the Hans Hofmann catalogue raisonné, writes of this work:
"I intend to include Calliope (muse of epic poetry), 1963, in the Hans hofmann Catalogue Raisonné. Its joyful simplicicty, evocative of the Renate series to follow, is utterly remarkable given that the work was painted during the year of the sudden death of Hofmann's first wife, Maria (Miz), and long before he met Renate Schmitz. The open structure of the work is extraordinarily prescient of The Castle, painted two years later in 1965 (now owned by the Berkely Museum of the University of California)."
