Lot Essay

Matta achieved almost immediate recognition from the moment he began his artistic career in the late 1930's. Invited to join the Surrealists by André Breton, his role as an innovator was profound and well documented. Matta's later work continued to explore the metaphysical and cosmological themes that have been his constant obsession and guide until today.

This painting is being sold with a certificate of authenticity signed by Mdme. Germana Ferrari-Matta and will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist, archive no. 52/17.
