Scenes of Benedict healing the sick or offering benediction such as in Lorenzo Monaco's Scenes of St.Benedict (National Gallery, London) were the most common way to depict the founder of this oldest western monastic order. In this wood relief, however, he is depicted on his deathbed surrounded by six monks. This is comparable to another painting by Lorenzo Monaco from the same series entitled The Death of St. Benedict (National Gallery, London). In the present piece, a senior monk holds one of Benedict's attributes, the aspergillum, in what appears to be a symbolic blessing of the dying man.
