Lot Essay

A very similar trunk is in the public record office at Kew and illustrated in Celia Jennings Early chests in Wood and Iron HMSO/PRO Pamphlets, Number 7, 1974, Chest Number VII, where it is dated to the early 16th century. In the domestic context coffers and 'standards' are often recorded as receptacles for linen and books. The examples in the Public Record Office were acquired together with the documents deposited within them. As with the present example, the Public Record Office coffers retain part of their original linen cloth linings.
