An oak and walnut panel back armchair, English, early 17th century
with a simple moulded applied panel below a scrolling strapwork cresting stamped with initials IP, SP and IF, the downswept arms on turned supports and the intergral seat above plain friezes on block and turned legs joined by stretchers, the front rail also stamped WP (twice), MP (twice), IF and IB, retoed and front stretcher renewed -- 26in. (66cm.) wide, 44in. (112cm.) high, 23½in. (60cm.) deep

Lot Essay

The fact that several of the initials stamped on the chair end with P suggests family ownership over several generations and strongly supports the theory that the initials on such early chairs and other furniture are ownership marks rather than craftsman marks.
