Lot Essay

The Arms on the front and back of the cup are those of the Douglas clan, the motto translating as WISDOM AND VIRTUE. The arms might originally have been painted, since it would only be by assessing the details that could have been picked out in colour alone, that the specfic branch of the Douglas clan that the arms relate to, could be ascertained.
