Lot Essay

The picture with the rosewood frame, depicting the maiden in a melancholic pose, was reputedly the work of Clementina Walkenshaw, God-Daughter of Queen Sobieski Stuart who had married the exiled Prince James Stuart. She was presented to their son, the young Prince Charles who apparently fell in love with her. In 1752, the Young Pretender sent for Clementina and the following year she gave birth to a daughter, Charlotte. They parted company in 1760 and did not meet again.
