A Chinese Taoist priest's two-symbol robe of chestnut brown satin, finely worked in silks, couched gilt thread and gilt strip, the back applied with a panel of ivory silk worked with a central medallion depicting a Taoist paradise, flanked by two of the Twelve Symbols of Authority, the Sun and the Moon, and by pairs of peacocks in flight against a gilt trellis ground, the borders worked with dragons, cranes and mythical creatures amidst brightly coloured clouds, 19th century
