Le Grand Dauphin visiting an encampment, an interesting fan, the paper leaf painted with what appear to be the Grand Dauphin and his son Louis, duc de Bourgogne, both wearing the ribbon of the Saint Esprit, Marie-Christine of Bavaria, several courtiers, a noble lady and gentleman stepping out of a large building on the right, with resting soldiers on the left and in the background, the verso with a tree, flowers, birds and butterflies, the ivory sticks pierced and painted with urns, faces and gold dots imitating piqué work, the guard sticks piqué with gold - 10in. Lot Essay

Le Grand Dauphin (1661-1711) was given command of the army in Flanders and it was under him that the famous "forced march" from Vignamont to Pont d'Espieres took place in 1694, which secured French Flanders from William III

The fan allegedly belonged to Madame de Montespan (1641-1707), mistress of Louis XIV, who retreated to the convent of St. Joseph in Paris in 1687 where she eventually became Mother Superior
