Lot Essay

Le Grand Dauphin (1661-1711) was given command of the army in Flanders and it was under him that the famous "forced march" from Vignamont to Pont d'Espieres took place in 1694, which secured French Flanders from William III

The fan allegedly belonged to Madame de Montespan (1641-1707), mistress of Louis XIV, who retreated to the convent of St. Joseph in Paris in 1687 where she eventually became Mother Superior
