POSSIBLY LATE 17TH CENTURY

The richly scrolled and elaborately carved fruit, foliage and bird of the present mirror-frame relates to a profusely carved frame at Ham House, Richmond, in the manner of Grinling Gibbons and dated to circa 1675 (M. Tomlin, 'Picture Frames at Ham House', The International Journal of Museum Management and Curatorship, vol. 4, no. 2 June 1985, p. 136-137, fig. 15). A large mirror, attributed to Grinling Gibbons, with rectangular plate but surrounded by richly carved fruit, vegetables, scrolls and surmounted by a pair of billing doves was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 5 July 1991, lot 52 (£3,800).
