Lot Essay

Lyric poetry is celebrated with love's sacred roses displayed in the laurel-festooned and triumphal-arched crest-rails of the parlour chairs, while laurels also festoon the antique-flutes of their ribbon-fretted 'vase' splats, which are flowered with Grecian palms.
A related palm-flowered splat features on a chair acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1907, and attributed to William and John Linnell of Berkeley Square (R. Edwards, A History of the English Chair, London, 1951, no. 93 and M. Tomlin, Catalogue of Adam Period Furniture, London, 1982, Q/2, inv. no. 503-1907).
