Lot Essay

The trellis-patterned needlework covers of the present lot are worked in an unusual form of cross-stitch, perhaps of Scottish origin. It relates to needlework covers on a sofa with matching chairs and a stool at Newhailes, Musselburgh, East Lothian. The needlework on the Newhailes sofa was described in John Cornforth's 1996 Country Life article as being 18th Century, but possibly not original, as in the present lot (J. Cornforth, 'Newhailes, East Lothian - I', Country Life, 21 November 1996, fig. 9, p. 50).
