Lot Essay

With its Grecian scrolled feet and secretaire-fall concealed by drawer fronts, this French-fashioned marble-topped secretaire relates to the secretaire of a bookcase featured in Gillows' Estimate Sketch Books, dated 1797. Richly figured satinwood features in their books for a related secretaire-bookcase supplied three years previously for their London shop by R. Clarkson (L. Boynton (ed.), Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, figs. 148 and 146).
