Paris, 1780/1789, with the first discharge mark for very small items of Henry Clavel 1780-1782 and the second discharge marks for small and for very small items of Henry Clavel 1782-1789
Slightly tapering rectangular étui-à-tablettes with arched top, of oblong section, the two short and two long sides of both cover and base inset with mother-of-pearl panels, the four large panels inlaid at the corners with engraved gold flowerspray spandrels, the hinged lid with pierced gold inscription SOUVENIR D'AMITIE within a vertically engine-turned band stamped with garlands of roses, the obverse of the base centred by a glazed oval medallion containing a portrait miniature of a young gentleman facing left in charcoal grey velvet coat, white frilled lace cravat, powdered short wig with black wigbag, within a fluted gold border surrounded by a stamped gold wreath of roses, the reverse with identically framed and glazed plaited brown hair panel set with scrolling pierced gold initials 'DWVD', silver-gilt outer mounts stamped with a garland of roses; inside a gilt-metal capped pencil and three-leaved tablets with silver rivet
