Jean Frémin is one of the best-known French gold-box makers of the Louis XV period. The present box appears to be one of his earliest works, predating the gold and lacquer box in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore hitherto considered as his earliest known box, by six years. Other boxes by his hand are to be found in the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Wallace Collection and in the Gilbert Collection, London.
