We are grateful to Dr Monique Maillet, the author of the forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the Van Blarenberghes, for identifying on the basis of a photograph, in a letter dated 30 October 2002, the artist as Louis-Nicolas Van Blarenberghe. She has identified the scene as the Battle of Melle opposing the English and French troops close to Ghent on 9 July 1745. This miniature will be included in Dr Maillet's forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the Van Blarenberghes.
