The horse in this picture, Jonathan Wild, foaled in 1843, by Stockport by a mare out of Whisker, has previously been erroneously identified as Mr Isaac Day's Caravan, whose colours were also white with a green cap. Jonathan Wild is known to have been ridden by T. Ryder. His most famous victory was at Goodwood on 28 July 1846 when, starting at ten to one, he won by a neck from The Hero who was to go on to win the next two Ascot Gold Cups.
For no obvious reason, the stock of Jonathan Wild's dam were often named after notorious villains. Jonathan Wild (c. 1682-1725) ran a lucrative operation as a receiver of stolen goods, was convicted and hung. The racehorse Jonathan Wild was later renamed The Highwayman.
