FORESTER, Cecil Scott [pseudonym of Cecil Lewis Troughton Smith (1899-1966)]. Typescripts for 8 short stories: 'Born at Sea', 'The Rescue', 'The Voice', 'Bertram and the Dictators', 'Between Eight and Eight', 'The Grip of Death', 'Harold and the Statue' and 'Hollywood Blood', together 123 pages, 4to; and photocopies of typescripts of the novels 'Mr Wenn' (270 pages) and 'The Pursued' (266 pages), and a brief sketch 'Playing Bridge Professionally' (two pages).

UNPUBLISHED WORKS BY THE CREATOR OF HORNBLOWER. The short stories, as well as dealing with Forester's characteristic seafaring territory, include tales of prison escapes, espionage and murder, often with macabre or fantastical twists. Of the novels, Mr Wenn tells the story of the curious life of Count Wenn von Wennstein, reduced, after a heroic career in the Great War, to the position of a senior clerk in a London firm, living in lodgings in Brockley; The Pursued, a tale of seduction and revenge in suburban England, relates the events set in train when Marjorie Grainger returns home one evening to find her sister dead in her kitchen.
C.S. Forester published The African Queen in 1935 and with The Happy Return (1937) inaugurated the successful Hornblower series. The present collection of stories are apparently unpublished, with the exception of 'The Grip of Death', which has appeared in German translation as 'Eisige Umarmung'. (11)
