The Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romanes, compared together by that grave learned Philosopher and Historiographer, Plutarke of Chaeronea: Translated out of Greeke into French by James Amyot ... and out of French into Englishe, by Thomas North, London: Thomas Vautroullier & John Wright, 1579. Small 2° (309 x 210mm.). Woodcut headpieces, initials, portraits and decorations. (Title and final text leaf supplied in facsimile, some light staining at inner margin of a few leaves, occasionally touching text, occasional mainly marginal staining elsewhere, pp.920-921 heavily stained with red pigment, similar, mainly marginal, staining to a few other leaves, minor worming to last few leaves, penultimate leaf remargined without loss). Later reversed calf. (Rebacked, some light staining). Provenance: Lancelot and William Brett (early clipped signatures on front pastedown, and a further ownership inscription on p. 718).
