Lot Essay

Hippomenes was the successful suitor of Atalanta. To win her hand, he bettered her in a foot race by dropping some of the golden apples of the Hesperides, Atalanta stopping to collect them.

The white marble original by Sauvage is held in the collection of the Musee de Louvre.
