Lot Essay

Claude Michel "Clodion" (1738-1814) was most famed for his statuettes and small figural groups executed in bronze and terracotta. They were often informal, frivolous and erotic in nature and therefore were more applicable stylistically to the classical ideals of France prior to the Revolution. The terracotta group in this lot is in keeping with this style.
