A fine 19th-Century French nickel-plated transit theodolite,
signed on the horizontal plate A. Berthélemy à Paris, the 12-in. long telescope with objective lens dust cap and ray shade and rack and pinion focusing to the eyepiece, mounted on twin A-frame supports with a graduated bubble level mounted above and a second at the base, the silvered-brass horizontal circle with twin verniers, magnifiers and ivorine shades and tangent-screw fine adjustment, on a short column to a flat tripod foot with adjustable screw feet, clamp and tangent-screw fine adjustment, and threaded for tripod or staff mounting, in the original fitted wooden case, the inside of the door with the trade label for A. Berthélemy, Constructeur d'Instruments de Précision 16, rue Dauphine, Paris, with painted brass carrying handle and four hooks and eyes -- 13½in. (34.3cm.) high
