A good 19th-Century lacquered-brass compound monocular microscope,
signed on the foot J. Swift Optician 15 Kingsland Rd London with detachable body-tube with rack and pinion focusing and micrometer fine adjustment, substage attachment with aperture disc and plano-concave mirror, the main limb tilting on an axis on two uprights to a Y-shaped foot, fitted to a mahogany base, with one eyepiece, an objective in a canister marked OBJECT GLASS 1 & 2In and one in a canister marked ¼In And.w Ross & C.o Opticians 33 Regent S.t Piccadilly, prismatic objective and eyepiece attachments, substage condenser attachment, live box and tweezers and a bull's-eye condenser on a heavy round base, in the original fitted mahogany carrying case with a drawer for slides and carrying handle (some loss to veneer on top) -- 9¾in. (24.7cm.) high; and a selection of slides contained in a pine box with six trays and in three impressed paper-covered card boxes, of two trays each, all contained in an impressed paper-covered wooden box with two brass hooks and eyes, the slides including many amateur preparations with hand-written labels, some labels marked PRIZE MEDAL 1862,many prepared by NORMAN, many covered with green or otherwise decorated coloured paper, four slides made of wood with ivory covers with green hand-written labels
