AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED KNOB-HANDLED PATERA
Attributed to the Painter of Ruvo 542, Circa 360-350 B.C.
One side of the exterior with Eros seated on a cista, a mirror in his raised right hand, a draped female figure to either side, the figure to the left lifting a box in her left hand, a cluster of grapes in her lowered right hand, the figure to the right leaning on a column, a grape vine in her right hand; the other side with a draped female figure seated on an Ionic column capital, a phiale in her raised left hand, to her left a draped female figure with a cluster of grapes and a wreath, Eros standing to the right beside a perirrhanterion, a vine hanging from his right hand; meander and crossed squares below the scenes, palmette complexes beneath the handles, ovolo along the rim; the interior with a band of laurel in added white encircling a five-pointed star, rosettes on the handle knobs

This vase was attributed by A.D. Trendall in personal correspondence with the owner in 1992. Although never published, Dr. Trendall added this vase to his corpus as no. 13/173a.
In the letter Dr. Trendall notes that this is only the third work that has been attributed to the aforementioned painter.
