A ROMAN BRONZE BALSAMARIUM
Circa 2nd Century A.D.
In the form of a well-modelled satyr's head, his hair composed of thick comma-shaped locks encircled by a wreath of vine leaves, his pointed ears emerging from within the locks, with two locks upswept at his forehead framing his small horns, a goatee on his pointed chin, prominent scent glands on his neck, his open mouth grimacing revealing his teeth, the lidded eyes with the pupils indicated, the vessel with a flaring foot and concave base, the wide circular mouth with a hinged flat lid, a ring surmounting either side of the head through which is looped the knobbed ends of the handle
