A ROMAN MARBLE CINERARY URN
Circa 300 A.D.
Oval in shape, carved around the exterior, the obverse in high relief depicting a hunting scene, the central figure mounted on horseback, clad in a soldiers uniform with a short pleated skirt over leggings, his mantle waving behind, his right arm extended out behind him, his rugged face with thick brows and closely cropped hair, stepping upon the head of a stag lying trampled below, a hound racing before him leaping over a second fallen animal, a draped female figure, perhaps Diana, following closely behind, with a dagger? in her left hand, her drapery clinging to her form as her himation billows behind, to the right a second figure on horseback, perhaps Apollo, nude but for a mantle, his hair pulled back in a chignon, reaching back preparing to hurl a stone, a lion racing toward him, the reverse carved in low relief with two nude Erotes moving to the right, a tree between them, each wielding a spear, the Eros on the left looking back over his shoulder, his right arm extended, the Eros to the right driving his spear into the neck of a stag, its tongue lolling, some traces of original pigment preserved
