A PALMYRENE LIMESTONE FUNERARY RELIEF
Circa Mid 2nd-3rd Century A.D.
The deceased, most likely a priest, depicted reclining on a richly upholstered mattress at a funerary banquet, his left elbow propped upon an upholstered cushion, his hand resting on his bent right knee, a patterned cup resting on the fingertips of his left hand, wearing a Parthian-style belted tunic over trousers, both with pronounced folds, the long-sleeved tunic with embroidered patterns along the hem, cuffs, collar and down the front, the trousers with a vertical floral pattern embroidered down the front, the mantle pinned at his right shoulder and wrapped around his left shoulder and arm, bearded, his long hair center-parted with snail curls at the ends, with a rectangular altar to the left upon which rests his modius encircled by a laurel wreath and centered by a medallion with a male bust
