A SUITE OF ROMAN GOLD JEWELRY
Circa 2nd-3rd Century A.D.
Including a gold necklace of fourteen flat links each in the form of a Herakles knot, interspersed with plain links, eight of which are threaded with a lentoid sapphire, and one with a rectangular emerald, terminating in a hook and loop closure; a bracelet of a large and small C-shaped sections of jet, with ribbed gold foil caps pinned in place, one set with a hinge, its bronze pin now corroded, the other end with a gold fastening pin, the larger section centered by a gold disk set with a cabochon amethyst; a pair of gold earrings, each with an openwork sheet square, an S-shaped earwire in back, an emerald bead prong-set in the center, with a single pendant of joined spheres framing a box-set sapphire, the square oriented obliquely, terminating below in a wire once threaded through a now-missing bead; a pair of gold buttons, each die-formed in the shape of a scallop shell with a T-shaped fastener on the reverse; and a gold lozenge-shaped pendant with a ribbed suspension loop
