A ROMAN HAEMATITE MAGIC GEM
Circa 3rd-4th Century A.D.
One side of the large oval stone engraved with Abrasax, the anguipede, its cock's-head in profile to the right, holding a whip in its right hand and an inscribed shield in its left, a quadrant above centered by a star, Abrasax framed on all sides by a lengthy Greek inscription, the other side engraved with a mummiform figure on a plinth, a snake coiled around its body with its head projecting forward over the crown of the head, a one-line inscription above, the figure framed by a series of symbols, including the sign for Chnoubis
