A BYZANTINE GOLD AND EMERALD PENDANT CROSS AND CHAIN
Circa 5th-7th Century A.D.
The cross with flaring arms radiating from a central square, a large granule between each arm and at each corner, a square section of mother-of-pearl bezel-set in the center, and emeralds set in each arm, a suspension loop above, the cross suspended on a figure-8 loop-in-loop chain with cruciform terminals formed of four large granules, ending in a modern hook and loop closure
