Lot Essay

The cypher is that of Victoria Mary (formerly Mary of Teck) Duchess of Cornwall & York, wife of the future King George V. With the accession of Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, the Duke of York became the Heir Apparent, but for the best part of 1901 found himself temporarily denied the customary title of Prince of Wales and for a short period of time the Duke and Duchess of York became known as the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York.
On 16 March 1901 the Duke and Duchess embarked on an important overseas tour to Australia and the bangle was presented to Lady Annie Allen Lawley wife of the honourable Sir Arthur Lawley, KMG, Governor of Western Australia.
