Robert Chignell's biography identifies this picture as Cole's swansong - the last finished canvas to leave his easel, and one that exemplifies his technical precision and fidelity to nature. Chignell notes that the trees and the passage of reflection below are 'unrivalled' within the artist's oeuvre.
