A note on the reverse indicates that this view incorporates the following townships, potteries and district landmarks: Burslem, Eturia Hall, Eturia Works, Hanley, and St Peter's Church. Burslem is a market town and parish which lies three miles north east of Hanley. It can be seen on the far horizon whilst Hanley can be seen centre-left. In the mid nineteenth-century the separate townships of Hanley and Shelton together formed 'one densely populated and well-built market town...the largest in the district called the Potteries, in which it holds a central situation' (William White, History, Gazetteer and Directory of Staffordshire, 1851.)
