The marks on the ricasso are those of Wolfgang Stantler of Munich. The sword belongs to a group made for a Bavarian corps, probably the Munich town guard. Many examples survive in the Bayerisches Armeemuseum, Ingolstadt. Cf. Wallace Collection A 612
