A RARE 'MAXIMILIAN' SHAFFRON
German, circa 1520
In two halves riveted together horizontally, shaped to the front of the horse's head, decorated with radiating flutes, and with prominent medial ridge down the nose, the eye openings and the lower border each with narrow turn bordered by lining rivets (some missing), pierced on the brow for a plume-holder (missing), separate ear-pieces, and later shield-shaped escutcheon (small repairs to left side of the nose and to the right ear-piece)
