NINE IRON AXE-HEADS, SOME IN EXCAVATED CONDITION
15th-17th Century
The first two from fighting hand-axes, the first with "bearded" blade, the bottom cut off at an angle and decorated with serrations continuing up the back, short tubular vertically-ribbed socket, and square peen; the second with small chisel-shaped blade and narrow neck separated by a reinforced hole for the haft from an elongated peen with ball-shaped end, and decorated throughout with punched dots; the third with "bearded" blade, truncated on the bottom, with narrow neck linking it to a cube-shaped socket with projecting flanges above and below; the fourth from a cooper's axe (?) made entirely flat on one side, and comprising a long narrow blade with slightly convex edge linked by a tapering neck to a short tubular socket with flat back; the remainder probably from felling-axes with wedge-shaped blades (one damaged), three bearing makers' marks
